What Is a Self Lock Cake Box?

A self lock cake box is a one-piece folding bakery box that locks itself together without glue, tape or staples. It is made from a single die-cut sheet: a bottom panel with a front and back wall, two side panels with corner lock flaps, and a top flap that forms the hinged lid. When the box is folded, the corner lock flaps wrap around the corners onto the outside of the front and back walls, and their dovetail hooks slide into a curved slit cut into each wall. The lid then closes over the top, its rounded lid lock flaps fold down over the front and back walls and their centres tuck into the same slits. The result is a square, sturdy box that keeps cakes and pastries safe and opens and closes easily.

How the Self Lock Corners Work

Assembly takes only a few seconds. Start with the blank flat and fold up the front and back walls from the bottom panel. Next, fold up the two side panels. Each side panel has a corner lock flap at both ends, shaped like a dovetail with a small hook. Wrap each corner flap around the corner so it lies flat against the outside of the front or back wall, then push its hook into the end of the curved slit. When both hooks on a wall are seated, they pull the corners tight and hold the walls upright. Because the flaps sit on the outside and lock through the slit, the corners stay square and the box can be lifted without opening.

How the Lid Closes

The top flap is attached to one of the side panels and acts as a hinged lid. On its two ends it has broad, dome-shaped lid lock flaps, and along its far edge a narrow tuck flap. To close the box, bring the lid down over the top, slip the tuck flap inside the opposite side panel, then fold the lid lock flaps down over the front and back walls and tuck the centre of each dome into the curved slit. The lid is now held on all four sides. It can be opened and closed again many times, which makes it easy for customers to take out a slice and close the box for later.
